Building to last where replacement is hard.

In the fragile, remote ecosystems where MARA works, how you build matters as much as what you build. Materials, systems and techniques determine how long a structure will last and the footprint it leaves on the land. That is why MARA builds on three principles: bioclimatic design, stilt construction and self-sufficiency.

Our environmental management system is described under Sustainability › Environmental management. This page covers construction techniques.

Construction techniques

01

Pressure-treated timber

Timber treated to resist moisture, fungi and insects in tropical, páramo, rainforest or salty coastal environments, with maintenance recommendations for the client.

02

Stilt structures

Structures raised on piles for unstable ground, wetlands and coastal areas, which reduce earthworks and impact on the soil.

03

Bioclimatic design

Solar orientation, natural cross-ventilation and daylighting to cut energy use over the building’s life.

04

Self-sufficiency in remote sites

On-site energy, water and sanitation where public networks don’t reach: rainwater harvesting, solar power and on-site treatment when the project requires it.

05

Prefabricated modules

Off-site prefabricated elements that cut construction time and impact in hard-to-reach places.

06

Less cement and steel where feasible

Lower-footprint alternatives where technically feasible, without sacrificing the agreed specification.
