01 · What was built

Staff welfare module and Carrizal headquarters.

Between January and April 2024, with Patrimonio Natural and funding from KfW, the German development bank, MARA finished building the sanctuary’s staff welfare module and upgraded its administrative headquarters in the Carrizal sector. The photos on this page show that module: brick walls, clay tile roof, fireplace, kitchen and rooms opening onto the courtyard.

02 · Where

Andean forest in Boyacá.

The sanctuary protects high Andean forest and páramo between Villa de Leyva, Arcabuco and Chíquiza, including Iguaque Lake, a sacred site in Muisca tradition. It is a land of water, with sensitive plants and wildlife.

03 · The challenge

Building inside a sanctuary.

The work takes place inside a protected area, with mountain access, frequent rain and strict rules for handling waste, water and materials. The module had to be warm and durable for the team that lives and works in the sanctuary.

04 · MARA’s other works in the park

Three contracts between 2022 and 2024.

2022–2023 · Furachiogua visitor center. With the Colombia en Paz Fund, through Consorcio ARQMARA Iguaque, a consortium of which MARA Ltda is a member: studies, designs and works for the Furachiogua visitor center, a restroom in the Mamá Ramos sector, camping platforms, the sanctuary’s entrance portal and the first stage of the works at Carrizal.

2024 · Electrical works. In June 2024, also with Patrimonio Natural and KfW, MARA carried out electrical works in the sanctuary.

05 · The outcome

A proper place for those who look after the sanctuary.

A completed staff welfare module and an upgraded headquarters for the National Parks team, plus the facilities to receive visitors at Furachiogua.
